Lead Beneficiary: Association of Municipalities in the Attica Region – Solid Waste Management (EDSNA)
ESDKNA (Association of Municipalities and Communities in the Attica Region) has been established with ministerial decision No. 57239/10.09.1970 (GG 788/1970) as the Solid Waste Management Authority for all the Municipalities and Communities in the Attica Region. EDSNA (Association of Municipalities in the Attica Region) according to Kallikratis Plan (L.3852/2010, article 211) is the total successor of ESDKNA and has been established with ministerial decision No.52546/16.12.2011.
EDSNA, being the Solid Waste Management Authority of Attica, is responsible for implementing solid waste management planning and the infrastructure such as the MBT of Ano Liossia, restorations of old landfill sites, construction of new landfills, waste transfer stations such as the Schisto Transfer Station which is the central transfer station of Attica Region, treatment of hazardous medical waste etc. During its 30 years of operation, EDSNA has succeeded in a significant progress. It has implemented and keeps implementing important and complex high technology projects. It has also introduced innovative methods and practice in Greece. The truly high value role of EDSNA is reflected not only on its good relations with the local authorities but the citizens too. EDSNA expresses and promotes with consistency an active and environmental sound social awareness which is the forefront of the local authority on the environmental issues and the solid waste management.
EDSNA consist of 9 Sectors (7 technical, 1 administrative and 1 financial) and has 335 employees of all technical and economical occupations (engineers, economists, technical staff, etc) and is self-governed in economic and administrative issues. Programming, Research, Innovation and European Programs Sector will coordinate the progress of the project while Sector of Recycling and Sector of Prevention, Quality and Reuse will be the responsible sectors to implement the project’s requirements.
Beneficiary 2: Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy
The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy as it has been modified by the Presidential Decree 100/2014 published at the Government’s Gazette {No. 167 (`A) on the 28th of August 2014. It belongs to the main public body of Greek Government. The Ministry of Environment and Energy works to achieve the protection of the natural environment and resources, the improvement of quality of life, the mitigation and adjustment to the implications of climate change and the enhancement of mechanisms and institutions for environmental governance. Has developed a strategic plan based on 4 pillars amplified into strategic objectives. The third pillar is directly related to the project:
Improve quality of life with respect to the environment
- Urban Regeneration
- Improve air quality and soundscape
- Enhance accessibility and sustainable mobility for all
- Efficient waste management and promotion of recycling
It consists of:
- 3 General Secretariat
- 8 General Directors
- 27 Chief Directorate
- 901 employees,
It has many experienced and professionals employees in the field of administration and financial and is self-governed in economic and administrative issues.
Beneficiary 3: University of the Aegean / Research Unit / Department of Business Administration
The EDITEK (Research laboratory Technology and Innovation Management )/ Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences / University of the Aegean has been established by the modification of the Presidential Decree 77/2002 (56/21.03.2002) published at the Government’s Gazette {No. 637 (2) on the 25th of February 2016. It belongs to the University of the Aegean, School of Management Science/ Department of Business of Business Administration. It consists of 3 senior researchers, 2 junior researchers and 2 administrative assistants. It is part of the Department of Business Administration, fully supported in ICT and administrative level. The advance AEGEAN-NET supports online communication between University Units and the ALKAIOS Info-System supports EDITEK in financial issues. As part of EURAXESS, PROTON Europe, ASTP, CREMO, EMUNI, INTERPET EUROPE, EDITEK has a direct link with regional development, influencing the ROPs of GR41/42 in a series of priorities related the NSRF of Greece and educational policy. 7 fully equipped research work places are currently hosted in the 29 sq.m. EDITEK main office supported by the Department of Business Administration.
Beneficiary 4: Albanian Ministry of Tourism and Environment
Ministry of Environment of Albania, is an public institution responsible for the formulation and implementation of the policies related with environment, nature protection, waste management, environmental monitoring , forest, water quality, protected area etc. Under the ministry operate two national bodies as are National Agency for the Environment and National Agency for the Protected Area. Also under the ministry is operating and functioning the national Inspectorate for the Environment and forest. The ministry employees experienced personnel and it is fully supported in ICT and administrative level.
Beneficiary 5: ILIRIA – Protection and Social & Environmental Development Association NGO
The PSEDA-ILIRIA is a NGO, established in 2003, and registered by the District Court of Tirana on 27.01.2003, with the decision No. 511. The main office is established in Tirana, but operates with its staff at national level. In the organization use to work 7-9 permanent staff and 5-12 staff working part time per year. The structure of organization is: 1) the general assembly, 2) board of directors 3) Chairman of the organization 4) Other support structures (secretary, vice chairman, financial department). Annual budget is around 115,000 EUR. Most of the resources are from implementation projects. Organization has two offices in Tirana with in total 11 working places. Organization use to work in different sectors and tasks; waste, nature conservation, environment, forestry, agriculture, climate changes, socio-economic studies etc. Organization has been working with different partners like; JICA, University of Salento-Italy, GEF, UNDP, WWF, Albanian Ministry of Environment, European Commission etc.
Beneficiary 6: Bulgarian Industrial Association – Union of the Bulgarian Business
BIA is a voluntary, non-governmental organization of the Bulgarian industry. Management bodies -General Assembly, Managing Board, Controlling Council, National Council of Presidents. BIA has collective members – 136 Sector organisations, 26 Regional organisations and 114 Local municipal bodies.
The personnel of BIA is structured in operating centers – Econcomic analyses and Investment, Industry and environment, International organisations and programmes, Employers and Industrial relations, Electronic systems and Internet services, etc.
Beneficiary 7: Cyprus University of Technology-Department of Environmental Science and Technology
The current number of permanent staff of the University is around 500 (200 administrative and 300 academic staff), while there are also around 200 researchers working under contract. The number of staff dedicated to EU programmes is around 350 (full time equivalent). The annual budget of the CUT is approximately 50.000.000 euro (on average), one third of which is dedicated to EU programmes. The Department of Environmental Science and Technology (EST) is highly involved in a large number of research projects dealing with environmental monitoring and environmental risk and impact assessment. The involved laboratory of EST is fully equipped with all the necessary infrastructure for the performance of analytical/experimental work. Moreover, the involved team includes experts in the fields of Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science and Engineering, Biology and Environmental Economics.
